Printmaker and Artist
What is an art print?
An art print is an original piece of art, created by the artist. In my practice, I create printing plates by hand, using different techniques such as engraving, carving and collagraph to create surface texture and tone. These plates are then hand inked and printed in small editions. Because each plate is inked and pressed individually between prints, there will be small differences in each print within an edition.
What is a collagraph?
A collagraph is a form of printmaking where a plate is made by gluing or attaching materials to the surface of the plate. The printing plate is then inked up and rolled with paper through the press. The ink transfers from the plate to the paper to create a print.
What is drypoint?
Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking technique. A drypoint needle is used to engrave or scratch lines and texture into a printing plate. When the plate is inked, the ink is trapped in the lines and burrs, which is then released onto the paper when run through the printing press.
What materials do you use?
I try to recycle materials where I can, and use the inside of tetrapak cartons and cardboard for the base of most of my printmaking plates. For collagraphs I use a few different things to add texture and tone including glue and tiling adhesive. For printing, I use Akua ink or Cranfield Caligo safe wash inks. My favourite papers are Fabriano Rosaspina and Tiepolo.
I am an artist based in Ĺtepoti Dunedin, working primarily in collagraph and drypoint printmaking. My practice weaves into the borders of family and working life, often engraved at my kitchen table while cartoons blare in the background. I enjoy working in layers and experimenting with plate surfaces and limits.
